michelle, i'm enjoying your blog so much already. this advice is prompted by your most recent packing post. ok, i've never travelled for longer than a couple of months at a time...but what i found backpacking in eastern europe was the importance of thinking realistically about what you can actually buy while you're there, and thus don't need to shove in your suitcase. i ended up leaving stuff in hostels because i was tired of carrying it, and mailing some stuff home for the same reason. clearly different ammenities are available in e. europe vs. india, but it's something to consider...better to carry less and leave room for additions, better to live a disposable life for a bit. for e.g., i brought a whole bunch of mini bottles of shampoo, and discarded them as i emptied them. i met a guy who lived in ireland for over 3 months, backpacking from town to town with a backpack the size of my schoolbag. he inspired me.
